The active/passive dynamic, which is taught in pair work, is a way of recognising through characteristic movement patterns:
how I am influenced by the other to initiate an action.
the quality of action/movement that I initiate (how strong or how weak, how direct or how indirect)
the consequences of that action for the other in the environment
how that influences them to respond to me
the imprint of the exchange between each pair on the wider situation
Borders of Humility and Humiliation
Influenced by outdoor performances in Java, I wanted people to be immersed in an atmosphere, to be able to move around and to choose what they watched. This would mean that they were active in creating their own pathways, positions and viewpoints throughout the piece and that they would select their own proportions i.e. how near, how far? based on personal need. They could come and go as they liked, and follow their preferences, which would give them information about themselves as well as about the performance.
